Grupo Mayan Launches Inaugural “Uniting Nations Cup” Golf Tournament at Its Mayan Palace Peninsula de Cortez Course

Grupo Mayan is proud to announce their establishment of the Uniting Nations Cup golf tournament being played on the Peninsula de Cortez golf course, a Jack Nicklaus and Jack Nicklaus II co-design at the Mayan Palace resort in Puerto Peñasco.

The Uniting Nations Cup is scheduled to take place annually at the Mayan Palace for the next five years, with strategic planning in place to lift the tournament’s profile with each subsequent year.

The concept of the Uniting Nations Cup (Copa Uniendo Naciones) is to highlight the alliance between the United States and Mexico beyond their commercial and cultural ties, while attempting to one day achieve the international reputation of a tournament similar to the legendary Ryder Cup. Another objective the Uniting Nations Cup sets out to accomplish is the expansion and promotion of the little-known Mexican port destination of Puerto Peñasco along with the Grupo Mayan resorts.

The Uniting Nations Cup will consist of teams competing from PGA Mexico and Southwest Section PGA with the participation of approximately 100 golfers, 20 of which will be professionals (10 Mexican and 10 from the U.S.), along with 40 high caliber amateurs from each country to level the playing field and ensure competitive yet exciting playoffs. Several relatively prominent figures were present when Grupo Mayan announced the Uniting Nations Cup.

The first Uniting Nations Cup at the Grupo Mayan resorts will be held May 12 to 15, 2011.

Día de Muertos (Day of the Dead) celebrates life and those who lived it, as ancestors are festively remembered with visits to cemeteries, special foods such as skulls and coffins made from sugar, chocolate or amaranth seeds, colorful decorations, and music. November 1 is set aside for remembrance of all Saints as well as deceased infants and children, often referred to as angelitos (little angels). On Nov, 2, those who died as adults are honored.
December 16-24- Posadas (procession) of Christmas is a nativity procession leading towards the town square. The festivities also include street fairs, piñata breaking, passion plays called “pastorelas,” and a feast in honor of the Virgen de la Soledad.

Mayan Resorts Receive Once More the EarthCheck Certification

Mayan Resorts just received the EarthCheck Gold Certification for the fifth consecutive year at the Riviera Maya property. Since 2004, four Mayan Resorts have earned the coveted recognition, the most recent being Mayan Resort Los Cabos in July 2009. Others to hold the honor include Mayan Resorts in Riviera Maya, Puerto Vallarta and Acapulco.

The Riviera Maya property excelled in the following categories: affiliation, benchmarking (efficiency indicators and environmental impact) and certification.

EarthCheck is an international certification for sustainable tourism which operates its own benchmark and certification standard; it is now trusted by more than 1,000 organizations in over 60 countries. Only businesses awarded the EarthCheck seal can claim to be independently recognized as sustainable.

Mayan Resorts’ Certification is specifically based on three EarthCheck criteria: environmental conservation practices, support of local communities and cultural traditions. The resorts’ certification encompasses virtually every aspect of hotel development and operations – including construction, landscaping, golf courses, restaurants, hotel operations and transportation.

Mayan Resorts’ environmental conservation practices range from recycling programs and proper handling of dangerous materials to protection of local flora and fauna to the prevalence of indigenous vegetation in landscaping. Resort employees are also evaluated for involvement in conservation efforts, plantings, beach clean up and mentoring of children to care about the environment.

Finally, Mayan Resorts were evaluated for their involvement in local and national cultural traditions, including support for literacy and education, promotion of local and national customs, activities to help employees become more culturally experienced through opportunities for them to engage in the arts.

Sightseeing at the Grupo Mayan Resorts: Sian Ka’an –A Gift From Heaven to the World

The Biosphere reserve of Sian Ka’an (in the Mayan language one of its interpretations is “gift of heaven”) is a protected natural area of 528,147 hectares. According to the Grupo Mayan travel experts, it was named a Biosphere Reserve in 1986 and later it was included in the UNESCO as a World Heritage site.

Sian Ka’an is located a few kilometers from the impressive archaeological site of Tulum in the Rivera Maya.

In prehispanic times, it was ruled by the Mayan chieftaincy of the Uaymil and Cohuah, say the Grupo Mayan Resorts researchers. They have found 23 archaeological sites through out the reserve. Among the most impressive ruins are the Chenchomac and Chunyaxche buildings, which can be visited after a tour of the canals that cross this idyllic place. Investigators have found what appear to be sacred human burials, pottery, figurines and tools that date 2300 years.

Today, the ecological reserve is a natural sanctuary inhabited by pumas, tapirs, opossums, toucans, white and loggerhead turtles, as well as endangered species such as the howler, spider monkeys, jaguars, anteaters, ocelots, and even dolphins and whales.

The wetlands of this biosphere as noted remarked by the Grupo Mayan experts, also home a vast and well kept crocodile population. On the other hand, human presence is limited to only a few fishermen, farmers and other service providers – about 2000 inhabitants that give life to the villages of Punta Allen and Punta Herrero y Javier Rojo Gomez.

Interesting fact: it is believed that at one time all the buildings in Tulum were painted red. Mar de Cortés International Airport Opens New Grupo Mayan Timeshare Vacation Destination to U.S., Canada and the World

PUERTO PEÑASCO, Mexico

One of Mexico’s best kept secrets is about to be discovered. The first international airport in Puerto Peñasco, and the first completely privately built airport in Mexico, opened on November 5 of 2009 for commercial service. Vacationers across the world, will, for the first time, have quick and easy access to Sea of Cortez beaches, natural beauty and recreational offerings.

The inaugural festivities were attended by Mexico’s president, Felipe Calderón, and other high officials as well as representatives from the tourism industry, including Grupo Vidanta. Known as "the world’s aquarium" and designated a World Heritage Site, the Sea of Cortés is renowned for its beaches, perfect weather, water sports, fishing and wildlife, including migrating whales and birds.

For decades, Puerto Peñasco has been known by residents of the Southwest as Rocky Point or even "Arizona’s Beach," because of its proximity to Phoenix and Tucson, both three hours away by car. But inaccessibility has kept the numbers of visitors low. Now, spearheaded by the Mar de Cortes International Airport, all that is changing. With it, the destination will be less than an hour by air from Phoenix; less than two hours from Los Angeles, Las Vegas and Albuquerque. In the near future, additional scheduled and charter service is expected to provide access to Puerto Peñasco from all over the world.

As one of Latin America’s largest developers of luxury resorts/timeshares, tourism facilities and infrastructure, Grupo Vidanta has 30,000 acres and seven miles of beachfront property to develop in Puerto Peñasco. NCAA Women's Golf Invitational

Punta Sur Golf Course, the breathtaking ocean side golf course by Nicklaus Design in Puerto Peñasco, Mexico, was host to the University of Arizona Wildcat Invitational. Less than a couple hours from the border between Arizona and Mexico, Mayan Palace lodged 18 collegiate women's golf teams, including 15 of the top 20 ranked teams. The tournament was a great success. A nice touch were children's golf sets provided by Nike that were handed out to children including a personal lesson from some of the lady golfers. This tournament was one of many to come at this and other Albatross Golf Courses located next to Mayan Resorts properties.

Mayan Resorts receives Top Award during the IV International Biennial of Interiors, Design, and Landscape.

February 13th, 2009, Mayan Resorts was bestowed six prestigious awards by the Sociedad Mexicana de Interioristas and the International Federation of Interior Architects/Designers during the IV International Biennial of Interiors, Design, and Landscape. Four silver medals were won in the four events where Mayan Resorts was entered; The Grand Mayan Los Cabos won two silver medals, one in the Hotels category and one in the Gym/Spa category; in the restaurant category, Tramonto Restaurant in Nuevo Vallarta won a silver medal; and the last silver medal was won by The Grand Mayan Riviera Maya in the landscape category. A gold medal was proudly won by Mayan Resorts`s architectural firm in the Trajectory of Interior Design.
